WooHoo: Ultimate Mac Hack for The Sims 2

How to Contribute

WooHoo is free, but it is not free-ware. WooHoo is contribution-ware. That means I’m asking as nicely as I can for contributions to support this project.

I believe software should be free. I believe software should be fun and easy to use. The home site should be friendly, useful and beautiful. These objectives are not usually compatible.

My solution is contribution-ware because I love The Sims 2 and I want Mac Simmers to have a great tool to get more fun out of the game.

So, I am working on this project full time because we have lost time to make up. A project this large should have a dedicated manager to keep it on-track and focused on the needs of the users.

smid has been putting in a heck of a lot of work to build this site and going to personal expense to do it. The server we are on now is very limited as to what we can do. And, smid is working hard building another site too, so we can move over to a more powerful server. I think she is going above and beyond a contribution and needs to be compensated for it. It is money well spent to have a beautiful web site.

Why not shareware?

Well, for one thing you have to pay for shareware. How many times did you like an application but not enough to pay the fee? Well, in that case don’t worry you don’t have to pay a fee for WooHoo.

How many times did you love an application but could not afford the fee? Well, in that case don’t worry you don’t have to pay a fee for WooHoo.

Why contribution-ware?

Why not? It’s as good as any. I think it has the best qualities of free-ware and pay-ware.

How to contribute?

The most appreciated contributions are cash. Some people wanted a guide, so I came up with this in US dollars. Benefactors will also be honored in the Hall of Fame.

Casual User $10

Enthusiastic User $20

Financier $50

Producer $100

Benefactor $1000

Other ways to contribute?

Linking to this site. Very important because we do not advertise.

Contribute talent: Users manuals, artwork, sounds, or whatever you are good at.

Contribute expertise: Either creative or technical.

Contribute bug reports.

Contribute suggestions to make WooHoo easier and more fun to use.

Significant contributors will be honored in the WooHoo Hall of Fame.

We are working on getting paypal. There a few problems to overcome first. Until then please show your support by mailing your contribution to :

If you cannot send through the mail, no problem, wait for paypal.

Full Version of WooHoo

At this time there is no full-version of WooHoo available. Everyone gets the same version of WooHoo.

Many features are locked out in the demo version as you are aware. This is to encourage people to make a cash donation. As I receive cash donations I will start to unlock features. When features are unlocked I will send a new version of WooHoo to all those on the mailing list.

If a few people contribute cash, 2 to 5% of users, this will enable continued development of WooHoo and the WooHoo website. Those who cannot afford to contribute cash can make other contributions. At this time the most important of those other contributions is linking to this web site and other forms of marketing WooHoo to the potential 80,000 Mac users who play The Sims 2 regularly. Developing software and building a website is expensive, but with this large of a user base only a few percent need contribute cash to cover the expenses of this project.

In conclusion, help us to help you to have a great app and a great site. WooHoo is your project. Thank you for supporting it.

  1. I believe I stated months ago when WooHoo was still developing on the MTS2 site that I would give you my firstborn child if you brought this project to fruition. Well, I’m not sure what good a screaming crying baby would do you and then there’s the issue of how I’m not pregnant nor ever planning to be, but I would like to contribute one way or another.

I would love to beta whatever version of WooHoo is currently available. Also, while I am a broke college student with no money, I am a broke college student with a writing major and an aptitude for Photoshop, so if you need help in those areas just let me know and maybe we can work something out.

Thanks in advance and good luck with the work!

  2. First born. How can I forget that. You know how to get someone’s attention. Glad to see you found your way back here.

I think at this time the best way to contribute is to get links to this site to increase traffic. Traffic has been picking up a lot in the last 30 days but is not yet where it should be. And this is something everyone can help with.

Several people have offered artistic talent. Thank you very much. Graphic arts are smid’s main department. But, until we post a list of specific things we need the best thing to do is look and see what you think is needed. Draw something up, a rough sketch or finished product and submit it.

I think it would be cool for the site to have art work all around submitted by users.

The application also needs some jazzing up art wise. When I get some time I will post a list of art needed for the app. Again the best thing to do is use the app (when I get the demo out) and see what is needed. Buttons with meaningful pictures on them are always nice. Maybe a nice border here or there, a subdued background. Just use your imagination.

Art work is best submitted in tiff format. LZW compression if possible. tiff is native to Mac OS, supports alpha and color sync and LZW is a very good loss-less compression format.

  3. aye! aye! i agree, there’s not enough of me and well, i can’t think of everything… and do eveything! between the site, the artwork and RL i realise i lack time. so as much as i’d like woohoo to keep a uniform look and feel, i want it to represent the user even much more… and it’s always agreeable to discover new talent! so i could set up a page where different user could submit artwork or ideas…

  4. Once we get the demo version to play with I hope to be able to give some input on what else it needs, ways to make it easier to use, etc. I am excited about this app, more so that nothing else is out there for us poor mac simmers. I can’t help much until I know what I’m looking at though.

By the way, are you going to get set up with PayPal for donations?

  5. Yes, getting pay pal set up is the plan. But, there are some difficulties in that. I need to demonstrate that there is sufficient interest in this project before I will be able to set up Pay Pal.

  6. Ooooohh. I don’t know how it works to get setup. I just know it is used a lot and I have an account that I use with them for certain sites. I wouldn’t mind offering something that way.

Do we have to request a demo version when it’s ready or will there be a link on here to download it? I’d like to try out the demo version and give you feedback on my findings. I didn’t post on the “Try Woohoo” page yet because I wasn’t sure if you were changing how to distribute woohoo once the demo was ready.

  7. When the demo is ready I’ll put a notice on the home page with instructions on the download page.

The I want to Try WooHoo page is for people to express themselves and for me to get an idea of how many people are waiting.

  8. I have noticed a couple of new links to this site. That’s great. Keep up the good work. The more people that can get here is the more support WooHoo will get and the more successful the whole project will be.

  11. I’ll happily send a contribution through PayPal when it’s available, but it’s not so easy for me to get money to you from Australia otherwise. Am hoping that more Mac simmers find their way here soon. (I’ve just posted a link on the Livejournal thesims2 community.)

  15. I am also waiting for PayPal to be set up but if this is going to take a while, I’ll just have to mail in my contribution. You are all doing a great job and I certainly hope you keep up with it.

  16. Once PayPal is up I’ll be more than happy to utilize that method. I’m sure cold hard cash will do the trick as well for now. Thank you for posting a mailing address for us.

  20. Hi there! Being one of those broke students but still willing to contribute, I suggest that I could do a German translation of Woohoo, which by the way is called “Techtelmechtel” in the German version of The Game.
